Ledbury 20 - Droitwich 15

Saturday, 20th November, 2004

Droitwich’s season took another turn for the worse on the weekend when they lost a match which they really should have won.

Spa were welcoming back Chris Hooper and Jamie Faulkener who had both been away due to work commitments.

It was Droitwich who dominated the early stages of the game with Chris Hooper proving inspirational at fly half. After 10 minutes Droitwich would take the lead with Hooper scoring a fantastic individual try running the ball past 5 Ledbury players to touch down for skipper Matt Blackmore to slot home the conversion.

Droitwich would extend their lead moments later when the electric Hooper picked the ball up after receiving a pass from Blackmore on his own 22 metre line to run the ball in at the corner. Blackmore failed to add the extra points, but Droitwich were the team in control. Ledbury would score just before the interval to make the half-time score Ledbury 5, Droitwich 12.

After a very even first ten minutes, the second half came to life when Ledbury scored another try to make the score 12--10. Ledbury then scored a penalty to gain a one-point lead with only ten minutes to go. But Droitwich powered straight back against the hosts and skipper Matt Blackmore scored a fantastic penalty from 40 metres to restore Droitwich’s lead. Ledbury, though, were not to be beaten and, with only seconds remaining, after a period of pressure found a gap in the Droitwich defence and went in under the posts to gain a 20--15 victory.
