London Welsh U16 0 - Droitwich Black U16 73

Sunday, 14th November, 2004

The Droitwich RFC ‘Black’ Under 16 side expected a tough challenge from London Welsh having lost ten players due to representative commitments.

After a long, exhausting coach journey to South West London, an apparently weakened Droitwich side faced up to play one of the leading lights of Mini/ Junior Rugby in the capital.

The team featured a number of ‘Gold’ players who were making their debut at this level of rugby. Ten players were unavailable from the last Black fixture versus Banbury, due to representative commitments playing for the North Midlands against East Midlands in the Midlands County Championship.

However, from the kick-off it became clear that the all round strength, pace and superior skills of the Droitwich side would prevail over their hosts. The forwards demonstrated an outstanding work ethic and technique in turning over many balls at scrum, lineout and in outfield play. This guaranteed the backs plenty of quick possession, which, allied to the silky skills of the midfield, brought tries in abundance. By half-time the game was over as a contest with the Droitwich boys turning round 46-0 in the lead.

Due to many half-time changes the standards of play became very patchy during the second period, but the domination continued and a further 27 unanswered points were added leaving the final score 73-0.

All credit must go to the squad of 21 players, but special mention must go to centres Tom Lavender and Paul Burton; and back row players James Owen, Andy Green and Dan Taylor who had particularly outstanding games.

Try Scorers:
Adam Thomas (3), Paul Burton (2), Ian Young (2), Tom Lavender, Jamie Samways, Stefan Buijnsters, Lee Nokes, Ben Raybould and Alex Shaw.
