Droitwich 0 - Old Silhillians 17

Saturday 23rd October 2004

Droitwich continued their poor start to the season in horrible conditions at the Glyn Mitchell Memorial Ground. The wet conditions played their part on Saturday in what was a very scrappy encounter won by the team that adapted to the conditions best.

The first half was a very even encounter with both teams making handling errors due to the poor conditions. But it was old Silhillians who were to make the breakthrough on the half-hour mark when, after a good period of pressure camped on the Droitwich 5 metre line, they finally managed to penetrate the Droitwich line with a rolling maul. The try was converted to give the visitors a 7 nil lead at half time.

The second half started in much the same vein as the first with both teams trying to capitalise on the other’s mistakes. After a spell of pressure in the Droitwich half it would be Old Silhillians who would extend their lead with a penalty after a Droitwich infringement.

Twenty minutes into the second half the visitors killed off the game with their second try by finding a gap in the home team’s back line to run the ball in beneath the posts. The conversion gave them a 17 nil lead. Droitwich fought back bravely with Gareth Knight going close with a superb solo run. But it was Old Sihilians who would run out victors after a hard fought game.
