Droitwich ‘Black’ U16 41 - Banbury U16 7

Sunday, 10th October, 2004

Droitwich RFC’s elite “Black” U16 squad opened their season with a dominant win against tough opponents from Banbury.

Prior to this match, Banbury boasted a record of only experiencing one defeat at fifteen-a-side rugby since under 13 level - and this despite playing all the top sides nationwide.

Droitwich coaches and players alike were nervous to ensure the right result from their first game of this campaign. It was also the first game this new, elite Black squad had played at Droitwich - so expectations were high.

The side begun really well, putting Banbury on the back foot. However, their dominance could not be turned into points due to the resolute defence of Banbury.

The Spa team were not to be denied and, with forwards and backs combining superbly, a series of phases resulted in Scott Morris opening the score with a try under the posts. This was duly converted and Droitwich did not look back as they built a comfortable lead of 26 points to nil by half-time.

The second period was very mixed due to continual changes of personnel, but three further tries were scored, none converted. Banbury scored a consolation penalty-try very late on, resulting in the final score of 41-7.

The forward pack were outstanding in all facets of the game, allowing the fleet-footed backs to show good running lines and great hands.

Tries:- Scott Morris (3), Stefan Buijnsters (2), Mike Penn, David Pitt
Conversions:- Ian Young (3)

The Gold side’s next game sees them play host to Old Halesonians on Sunday, 17th October.
