Droitwich 27 - Old Leamingtonians 31

Saturday, 2nd October, 2004

After a poor start to the season Droitwich turned in an impressive performance against an Old Leamingtonian team yet to taste defeat this season.

A focused Droitwich team came out of the blocks ready to make amends for the previous week’s poor display at Hereford. Spa started well, dominating the early exchanges, but it was Old Leamingtonians who took a ten nil lead early on after kicking a penalty and scoring their first of four push-over tries. Droitwich replied through Jamie Faulkener, who combined some impressive football skills and searing pace to touch the ball down in the corner for the prolific Blackmore to convert and reduce the deficit. It was Spa captain Matt Blackmore who gave Droitwich the lead, slotting home two penalties. But Old Leamingtonians replied to take a 15 points to 13 lead in with them at the break after scoring another push-over try in the corner just before the interval.

The second half began with Droitwich putting the visitors under early pressure. Good work in the loose by Dean Goddard and Andrew Manns gave Droitwich’s foreign flyer Puni the chance to squeeze in at the corner for the on form Blackmore to convert. Leamingtonians, though, carried on their powerful forward display, catching and driving from a line out to push over and draw level. Droitwich, battling to get something from the game, gave away a number of penalties of which Leamingtonians scored two to take a 26 points to 20 lead.

Droitwich battled on though and thought they had won the game when in the last minute impressive 17 year old Sean Walker, making his first team debut, set up Leon Hopkins who was on off the bench replacing Dean Evans to run the ball in from 50 metres. Blackmore converted and gave Droitwich a one point lead. But Old Leamingtonians came back after winning a line out and pushing over once more to snatch victory from the hands of an impressive Droitwich side.
