Droitwich 3rd XV 24 - Old Halesonians 3rd XV 5
Saturday, 2nd October, 2004
Droitwich were without skipper Peter Gurr this week as cry offs in the higher teams had seen his call up to 2nd team full back.
With a number of players playing out of position, Spa played a spirited game and had much of the possession and territory in the first half. This was converted into points with inside centre Matt Barker crossing the line twice for tries, both converted by flanker Nick Carter. Carter also added a penalty and at half time Old Hales could only muster an unconverted try to leave the score at 17-5.
Spa, with a couple of changes after the break that saw some experience replaced with youthful exuberance, continued where they left off and had the majority of the play. As fitness told, Spa’s up and coming juniors Rob Burton and Tim McLellan made a number of inroads into Old Hales backline and McLellan then added the only try of the second half, converted again by Carter. Final score 24-5. The win now sees Droitwich at the top of the Merit table.
Next week Spa are away at Pershore for more Merit table action.
