Welcome to the Under 9's pages for DRFC

Under 9's is for any child starting in Year 4 in September 2011.

This year sees our Squad start their journeys into Contact Rugby after their first two seasons in Tag Rugby. The Squad has had amazing success at Tag Rugby over the past two seasons.

In their first season of competitive rugby, at Under 7 level, the Squad went through the whole season only losing one game, which was by one try after extra time in the Final at the Banbury Tournament. They won every single game against all their local competitors and won a total of five trophies. The team won at Silhillians, Banbury (B team), Worcester, Stratford and Moseley Tournaments, sweeping all before them. A truly incredible start to their "careers".

In their second season, at Under 8, the Squad had the very difficult task of trying to live up to their previous levels! However, they went on to build on their previous successes and this year the Squad lost a total of four games, each by only one try. The team lost by one try to Rhiwbina in the semi final of the Cheltenham Tournament (going on to take third place in that Tournament) and by one try to Kings Norton in the final of the Moseley Tournament, taking the Plate home for second place. The other two losses were in Cardiff at a mini-tournament set up for us by Rhiwbina. The Squad lost to Rhiwbina and Pontypridd who are two strong teams from South Wales. The mini-tournament was played to WRU rules, which are similar but significantly different to RFU rules. The kids had a fantastic day out and learnt a lot from the experience. The team again won all their normal games all season, against all local competition and this year went on to win six Trophies at Tournaments. The team again won at Silhillians, Banbury (both A and B teams), Worcester and Moseley, as well as bringing home the Plate and being undefeated at the Wasps Twickenham Tournament in April.

The Club was invited to attend the Wasps Twickenham Tournament following our successes of the previous year. It is a significant Tournament with 32 teams entered at both Under 7 and Under 8 level with the Final for both age groups being played on the main Twickenham Stadium pitch at half time in the Premiership match. Our Team was drawn in the Group containing the reigning champions, Rosslyn Park, along with Windsor Dragons and Oxford Quins. The Group was seen as "the group of death". Our plucky little heroes played tremendously well, beating both Windsor and Oxford comfortably and finishing with a 2-2 draw against Rosslyn Park. Rosslyn similarly beat both Windsor and Oxford and the Group went into "countback" to see who would progress to the knockout stages. With both teams having the same results, and drawing against each other the next stage of countback was tries for/against. Again both teams had exactly the same results and so the countback went to the third level, tries scored. At this third level Rosslyn went through, having scored two more tries than us (we conceded two less). Rosslyn went on to the Final on the Stadium pitch again, prior to losing to our friends Rhiwbina. Our team went through to the Plate competition and brushed all of our opponents aside, taking the Plate in style and bringing home another piece of silverware. Our Team finished the day as one of only two teams undefeated (the other being Rhiwbina), a huge accolade for the kids!

In two seasons the Squad has won 11 Trophies! The kids have won the prestigious Worcester Tournament two years running. Both seasons have been played on the main stadium pitch at Sixways, with our kids being undefeated at our neighbours and doing our Club proud. In addition the Squad is undefeated at the Silhillians Tournament and has won three out of four Trophies (A and B teams) at the Banbury Tournament.

Our Squad is always looking for new players to come along and have fun with us! We have a friendly Squad of boys and girls and a team of Coaches who genuinely enjoy working with our small people and helping them develop and grow. This year sees the introduction of tackling and will be new for all of our current Squad so any new players can come along safe in the knowledge that all of our Squad will be learning together.

Our season starts on Sunday 4th September at 1030am. For further information please feel free to contact our Head Coach, Simon Richards, on 07792 776554 or via email on simon.richards1827@yahoo.co.uk
